Could you tell me about your areas of specialization?
I specialize in the field of computer sciences, system development, and web development.
Why did you choose to be a translator?
I have worked in software development (system and application) for more than 20 years. After retirement, I decided to work as a translator. It was a reasonable choice for me since I have lived in both Japan and USA for more than 20 year, have plenty of IT knowledge in both language, like writing, and have flexibility in terms of time.
Please tell me about your history and experience with the English language.
I studied British and American literature at Doushisha University and computer science at New York State University, obtaining two Bachelors. After graduation, I worked as a software engineer at IBM, Sybase, Yahoo and other such firms.
How are you able to maintain and improve your English skills?
I make a point to read news articles and watch news videos in English on the internet for several hours every day.
In addition, my husband is American, and thus we communicate in English.
What type of translator do you want to be?
I want to be someone who is knowledgeable in many subject areas. Thus far, my subject area has been in the field of computer and IT; however, I am thinking of working in literature as well.
What is the most interesting point you have come across while translating documents?
I use Katakana words, if terms are not suitable for Japanese words, while I avoid using too many Katakana words. It is quite difficult to maintain a balance in this regard. Also, software companies usually have translation style guides, which slightly differ from each other.
Which was the most remarkable translation assignment you have ever done?
I once translated a physics textbook, which was quite challenging and was a great learning experience.
How do you keep yourself updated with the recent happenings in the subject you are translating
I mainly maintain my English skills by reading articles related to new trends and developments. Also, I research the subjects associated with the translation project.
